Our CEO recently joined a panel discussion at the International Energy Week, on how to turn Europe’s energy transition ambitions into real, scalable progress.
Looking back, Europe has made enormous strides - wind power has grown more than 20-fold in 25 years, solar now generates more electricity than coal, and biofuels have gone from virtually nothing to 18 billion liters of biodiesel consumed annually. But the thinking that enabled this progress is now under strain. Energy demand is rising, but deployment is slowing. The challenge is no longer about ambition, it is about execution.
This is where "systems thinking" becomes essential - designing an energy transition that works as a whole. He shared his thoughts on four enablers for a new paradigm:
- Don’t pick winners and losers; that only guarantees we all lose – pick an outcome and accept there are many ways to achieve it.
- Be efficient or face failure – people will only buy what they can afford.
- Work together or you will find you are working against each other – individual industries cannot decarbonise whole sectors.
- Make action easy – policy should clear a straight path to the outcome we all want.
At VARO Energy, these principles guide our approach. We scale multiple energy solutions in parallel - investing in SAF, biogas, and e-mobility while continuing to decarbonise conventional assets. We build cross-sector partnerships, working with Lufthansa, Orim Energy, Höegh Autoliners, and the Port of Rotterdam on marine biofuels, and elexon GmbH on EV charging. And we invest where the economic case is strong - turning ambition into execution.
