Panel discussion at Energy Intelligence Forum 2024: Taking Stock of Transport

Our CEO participated in the Energy Intelligence Forum 2024 and joined a panel on “Taking Stock of Transport” alongside Chuka Umunna (J.P. Morgan), Harold York (Turner, Mason & Company), and moderator Abhi Rajendran (Energy Intelligence).

During the discussion, he highlighted the four Ps essential to progress the transition in the road, aviation and marine segments.

1. Perspective - The energy transition is complex. Despite the adoption of low-carbon technologies, we cannot flip systems overnight. The key is evolving today’s systems to support tomorrow’s needs.

2. Partnerships - Whether at a governmental or customer level, progress depends on understanding others and working together. Our work with Lufthansa and Höegh Autoliners, for example, enables scalable solutions for aviation and maritime decarbonisation.

3. Plan - This is about delivering enabling infrastructure at the right pace. For example, through elexon, we are expanding our charging infrastructure to over 30,000 charging points at 900+ locations, in Germany, Switzerland and Austria.

4. Pragmatism - Being cost-competitive is key. Wherever possible, we build for the future by leveraging existing infrastructure. A prime example is our development of sustainable aviation fuels in Rotterdam.

The energy transition will succeed when we balance ambition with realism. At VARO Energy, we are turning that balance into action - helping make the ambition of a sustainable future, in the fullest sense, a reality.
